Fire hydrants on the Doane University campus became canvases for creativity this year.
Assistant Professor Kailin Nielsen’s intermediate painting and advanced painting classes repainted all 16 fire hydrants with a school-spirit-based design during the spring semester. The classes started the project after the students returned from spring break in late March and completed it toward the end of April. Each student painted two or three hydrants.
Crete Mayor David Bauer was assaulted June 26 at his home around 9 p.m. by a Crete teenager. Eighteen-year-old Cameron Willey is currently facing 17 charges, including but not limited to resisting arrest, two counts of assault on an officer/emergency responder and willful reckless driving. Willey is currently out on bail, which was $35,000.
Dorchester is introducing live music to its Fourth of July celebration this year. The band, The Algorhythms, is made up of five Lincoln Public School teachers who are looking forward to jamming out with the Dorchester audience in between the parade and the fireworks. The Wilber Post 101 Legion seniors picked up an 8-3 win over Utica-Beaver Crossing July 1 behind two hits each by Jack Zimmerman, Karsen Fisher and Aven Smith. Nick Jacobson pitched four innings and allowed just one hit.
The Crete Public Library will be hosting Teen Game night on Thursday, July 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a variety of different types of games available for every different skill level. Registration is required and the event is for teens ages 12 to 17.
DeWitt Days 2024 will run from Thursday, July 4 through Sunday, July 7. Activities include a trap shoot, poker run, tractor pull, sand volleyball, cornhole, free swimming, bounce houses, parade, firework display and street dance. A full schedule of events is available at www.dewitt.ne.gov
