BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2024 8:00 PM PUBLIC SCHOOL LIBRARY 506 W. 9TH STREET DORCHESTER, NE 68343-0007 Notice of the time and place of the Dorchester Board of Education meeting was published in a newspaper of general circulation within the district. Newspapers of general circulation in the district include, but are not necessarily limited to, the Crete News, the Lincoln Journal Star, or the Omaha World-Herald. Notice is also posted in at least three prominent places within the school district which may include the following: Dorchester Public Schools, Farmers Coop, First State Bank, and the Village Office. Individual board members received in advance the meeting agenda and meeting materials. Pursuant to Section 84-1412 of the Nebraska Statutes, the public is hereby informed that a current copy of the Nebraska Open Meetings Act is posted in the Board meeting boardroom. Call to Order and Announce Open Meetings Act Verification The regular September board meeting was called to order by President Steve Vyhnalek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. 2. Roll Call Also present were Superintendent Curt Cogswell, Principal Jake Wiese, and Jen Feeken. 3. Receive Visitors and Announce Open Forum for Public Comment Matt Smith was present. 4. Request for Change of Agenda No request for a change of agenda. 5. Approval of the Minutes of the Last Meeting(s) Motion to approve the reading of the last meeting minutes passed with a motion by Kelli Schweitzer and a second by Carol Schnell. Principal's Report Mr. Wiese reported that MAP testing is almost complete with only one student needing to finish. Blue River Cohort was at Shickley on September 3rd. Longhorn Line-up will be on September 12th, MTSS Data Meeting Day will be September 24th, and Homecoming Week is September 23rd-28th. K-6 Grandparents' Day will be celebrated on October 4th. Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences are Oct 9th 5:00-8:30 and Oct 10th 8:00-12:30. NDE has approved competency-based crediting for world languages. This is designed for students who are "heritage speakers". 7.2. Superintendent's Report Mr. Cogswell shared that the seniors' project day consisted of painting the basketball court at the park and touching up the bleachers. The Patriot's Day program will begin at 8:15am on September 11th. The band placed 3rd at Yorkfest. Mr. Cogwell is in the process of finalizing and submitting the budget to NDE and the State Auditors. 8. Discussion Items 8.1. Legislative Special Session Mr. Cogswell discussed the outcome of the Legislative Special Session. 8.2. Special Education Corrective Action Plan Mr. Cogswell talked with the board about the special education corrective action plan that is currently being worked on. 8.3. Option Enrollment Resolution for 2025-2026 Mr. Cogwell discussed with the board updating our option enrollment policy and the maximum number of students allowed per grade. Motion to approve the maximum number of option students for the school year passed with a motion by Carol Schnell and a second by Shelly Lehr.
